Building a secure multi site network for DHL
DHL’s expanding footprint strained network consistency, failover, and security. We delivered a unified multisite design with redundant paths, NGFW hardening, segmentation, and centralized control, so logistics keeps moving when links fail.
Introduction
DHL operates across multiple locations with high demands on uptime, security, and performance. As operations expanded, their network environment became increasingly complex, multiple sites, inconsistent configurations, and limited failover capabilities created risks for both operational continuity and data security. In a logistics environment where downtime directly impacts delivery chains, a more resilient and secure network foundation was critical.
Outcome
We designed and implemented a secure, multi site network architecture with built in redundancy and advanced firewall configurations. The result was a highly available infrastructure with seamless failover between locations, improved network performance, and significantly strengthened security posture. DHL gained centralized visibility and control over all sites, ensuring consistent policy enforcement and rapid incident response.
What we did
We started by assessing the existing network landscape across all locations, identifying single points of failure, inconsistent configurations, and security gaps. Based on this, we designed a multisite architecture leveraging site to site VPNs and redundant connectivity paths.
To ensure business continuity, we implemented automatic failover mechanisms, allowing traffic to reroute instantly in case of connection loss at any site. Critical locations were equipped with dual WAN connections and intelligent routing to maintain uptime even during outages.
A key component of the project was the deployment and customization of next generation firewalls. We configured granular security policies tailored to DHL’s operational needs, including deep packet inspection, intrusion prevention (IPS), geo blocking, and application level controls. Network segmentation was introduced to isolate critical systems from general traffic, reducing risk exposure.
We also implemented centralized firewall and network management, enabling consistent policy deployment, real time monitoring, and rapid response to emerging threats across all locations.
Why it worked
This project succeeded because we approached it with a resilience first and security by design mindset. Rather than treating each site as an isolated network, we created a unified architecture that balances performance, redundancy, and control. The combination of intelligent failover, professional firewall customization, and centralized management ensured DHL could operate without disruption, while maintaining the high level of security required in a global logistics environment.
